As the number of Iowans living in poverty continues to rise, the devastating disasters of 2008, a faltering economy and rising unemployment make the life-changing impact of our work even more important. Yet revenue streams have not kept up with the increasing call for our services.
The majority of LSI's revenue (80 percent) is generated from government contracts, which help fund our day-to-day operations. However, these rates fall short of the actual cost of providing services and do not cover value-added programs and services, which go above and beyond minimum service standards to address the unmet needs of individuals and families.
Now More Than Ever
The challenges children and families face during these challenging times are daunting and LSI's mission of service to all is needed now more than ever to assist them on their first steps to success. Together with our partners we can change lives and lift up the most vulnerable populations in our society — our neighbors. They are the teenage mothers struggling to raise their children, the youth in the child welfare system who have been abused or neglected, adults with special needs wanting to live independently and the elderly striving to remain at home. Yet while the call for our services increases the revenue streams that make them possible continue to decrease. That is why LSI depends on people like you to make sure these gaps can be filled and the light of our work can shine to bring health, hope and healing to tens of thousands of Iowans.
